Helping Children Love Their Eyeglasses
Chances are that the moment your child is told that he/she will be required to wear eyeglasses, you will be faced with strong protests and fervent appeals not to force him/her to wear eyeglasses. You could try convincing your child of how eyeglasses are necessary for the health of their eyes and that they do not drastically alter appearances. Else, you could just take them down to an eyeglass store and let them see for themselves the wonderful array of eyeglasses specially designed for children.
Eyeglasses For Children
It is entirely possible that kids may like eyeglasses that look exactly like their parents' eyeglasses or reading glasses; or like that of an older brother or sister or even that of a best friend. One can find adult styles and shapes for younger children as well. For example, you can find frames made of plastic with elongated rectangular shapes or smaller frames in oval shapes. Then there is the classic adult look of thin, titanium frames but in a smaller size for kids. One look at these styles and kids will like the idea of wearing eyeglasses and looking all grown-up.
On the other hand, some kids look for style that stands out, similar to what their pop-culture heroes wear. These could be cartoon characters or popular characters like Harry Potter or Barbie. Many of these characters are being used to build unique product lines and your kid may like buying one of them. They are almost like adult eyeglasses in looks and design but with fun touches to make them more appealing to children. Like some frames have paw prints to match with the Blue's Clues Style while some are based on SpongeBob SquarePants with plankton marks on frames that glow in the dark. The wildly popular Harry Potter books and movies have created an enormous demand for frames that look exactly like what Harry wears.
Letting Children Choose
As adults you can worry about the fit, comfort and especially since you are shopping for children, the durability of the eyeglasses. However, for kids it is far more important that they get the feeling that they are part of the process in selecting the frame. Do not be all negative when your child has selected a particular style or design. Remember, if your child chooses an eyeglass that he likes and has played a major role in selecting them, it will go a long way in getting them to wear their eyeglasses regularly and taking proper care of them.
Give your child freedom to look around and try various frames. You can worry about the fit and durability. Almost all eyeglasses designed for children today, lay special emphasis on durability and safety and they come with designs meant to specially attract little children either with grown-up like appearances or with the design of their favorite cartoon character. With the large variety of eyeglass styles and designs in the market today, even for children, it is more than likely that you will be able to find a pair of eyeglasses that both of you just love.
